Okra are a southern staple, and for good reason. If you’re in the mood for some southern fare, but also want to satisfy your need for some spice then these are the okra for you. Although we in the US associate okra with southern cuisine, the fact is that these little seed pods are used all over the world. They even go by a ton a different names. From Lady Fingers to Kingombo, the names are as vast as the uses. In the US, we call them okra in most circles, but one of the most common names across the world is gumbo. The French first started calling a particular stew, made from okra, gumbo and as you may know, the name stuck with the Cajun culture in Louisiana. Many times, the name gumbo is used to describe both okra and the stew.
