Have you ever seen a Peppadew pepper listed in the ingredients of a dish at your favorite restaurant and wondered what it was? Peppadew is the trademarked brand name of sweet piquanté pepper cultivated in the Limpopo province of South Africa. This type of piquante pepper was first discovered in early 1993 and introduced to market later that same decade. The name is a combination of ‘pepper’ and ‘dew’. Although the pepper is sometimes described as a cross between a pepper and a tomato, this description is not botanically accurate, and refers only to the resemblance in color and size between peppadew and cherry tomatoes. Cherry tomato–size, maraschino-red Peppadews are often available hulled, seeded, and pickled in brine. They stay pretty crisp in the pickle brine, and the hot ones are about as spicy as pickled jalapeños, though with enough natural sweetness to balance the burn.
